R.E.P.O. is a co-op horror job simulator where you and up to five friends get sent into abandoned, monster-infested places to haul out valuable junk before it kills you. The pitch is simple and a little wicked: everything, including the things trying to eat you, obeys physics, so your biggest threat might just be a piano you’re carrying wobbling loose at the wrong moment.

How it plays

You’re working for a computer intelligence that doesn’t particularly care if you live, only that the cargo arrives intact. Armed with a physics-based grabbing tool, you and your crew explore haunted, decaying environments looking for valuable objects, then have to actually get them out in one piece. That’s harder than it sounds when a grandfather clock or a stack of fine china is involved and every step could send it tumbling. Proximity voice chat adds a layer of tension on top of the hauling, since staying quiet matters when something is nearby, and coordinating a heavy object across a room while whispering directions to your teammates is its own kind of stress test. Cash earned from successful extractions goes toward robotic upgrades and weapons, giving you a reason to keep pushing your luck on tougher runs instead of just packing it in after one good haul.

Who it’s for

This is built for groups who like their horror games with a side of slapstick. If you’ve enjoyed physics-comedy co-op games where things go wrong in stupid, hilarious ways, the setup here should click immediately, and the horror elements give it a sharper edge than most games in that space. It’s very much a “get some friends together” experience, since proximity chat and coordinated hauling are where the fun actually lives. Solo players or people hoping for a tightly scripted, atmosphere-first horror story should probably look elsewhere. It’s also worth remembering this is Early Access, so anyone allergic to unfinished edges or waiting on future updates should factor that in before buying.

Is it worth it?

For the audience it’s aimed at, a working group of friends who want an excuse to yell at each other over a couch (virtually), this is the kind of game that earns its keep fast. The core loop of hauling fragile, awkward objects while something stalks you is the sort of thing that generates its own stories, and that’s exactly what makes co-op games worth owning rather than just watching. Because it’s still in Early Access, it’s a reasonable candidate to grab on sale rather than at full price, letting the game keep cooking while you get in early with your group. If you don’t already have people to play it with, it loses a lot of its appeal, so weigh that before adding it to your library.
