Monologin
A directionless night-shift worker clings to a dying MMORPG, a legendary White Unicorn mount, and the belief that old games are more "real" in this short psychological horror visual novel about escapism and being left behind.

About this game
Monologin is a short visual novel that spends most of its runtime in the space between two worlds: a convenience store counter at night and the glowing interface of a dying MMORPG. Leo scans drinks and waits out his shift, but the game he actually lives in is EdenVale Online, an old MMO that almost nobody logs into anymore except for him and a handful of holdouts. When a rare in-game event fires up on a slow night, the story uses that as its excuse to dig into why Leo would rather be somewhere that barely exists than face the people standing right in front of him.
How it plays
This is a choice-driven visual novel, not a simulation of an MMO, so don’t expect grinding or systems. You read, you make decisions, and those decisions steer Leo toward one of three endings. What makes the structure interesting is the dual-perspective angle: the same encounters with Ari, Dai, Piko, and Uma get reframed depending on whose side of the conversation you’re paying attention to, so a line that reads as harmless ribbing from one angle can look like something sharper from another. The whole thing is built to be finished in a single sitting, somewhere around half an hour, which fits the tone. It’s not trying to be a long journey, it’s trying to be one uncomfortable night that ends before it overstays its welcome.
Who it’s for
If you’ve ever kept playing an old online game past the point where anyone else cared, or you just find the specific melancholy of empty servers and dead guild chats compelling, this one is aimed squarely at you. It’s also a good fit for anyone who likes visual novels that lean into psychological discomfort rather than jump scares, the horror here sounds like it comes from projection, isolation, and the fear of being left behind rather than anything supernatural. If you need combat, exploration, or a lengthy campaign to feel like a game gave you your money’s worth, this isn’t that, and you should probably look elsewhere. It’s also worth going in knowing the subject matter (loneliness, escapism, characters clearly struggling) is the point, not a side effect.
Is it worth it?
For what it is, a tightly scoped, narrative-first experience with a specific mood it’s clearly committed to, this is the kind of game that’s easy to justify picking up when it’s discounted. You’re not paying for hours logged, you’re paying for a mood and a story that apparently sticks with people who are into this genre. If you already know you like small, atmospheric visual novels that take a real swing at a theme instead of playing it safe, it’s a reasonable pickup even at full price. If you’re on the fence, it’s exactly the kind of title that makes more sense to grab on sale and knock out in one evening rather than let sit in a backlog.
