Metro: Last Light Redux is the polished-up edition of 4A Games’ 2013 shooter, dropped into Artyom’s boots as he wanders the irradiated tunnels and ruins of post-nuclear Moscow with a doomsday weapon hanging over everyone’s head. It’s less a straightforward shooter than a mood piece with a gun in it, and that mood, oppressive, damp, lit by flickering lanterns, is still the main reason to visit.

How it plays

You’ll spend most of your time creeping through metro stations and surface ruins, picking fights carefully because ammo and filters for your gasmask are always in short supply. The game gives you two ways to approach that tension: Spartan mode leans into combat and stealth as a more action-forward experience, while Survival mode strips away the comforts and turns every encounter into a resource-management puzzle. Layer on Ranger Mode, the series’ signature hardcore option, and firefights stop being fun in the traditional sense and start being genuinely stressful. Redux also folds in all of the original DLC, so the campaign runs noticeably longer than the base 2013 release, and small quality-of-life touches, checking your watch and ammo without pausing, updated melee and full-body animations, make moving through the world feel less clunky than it used to.

Who it’s for

If you like shooters that make you feel small and underprepared rather than heroic, this is your kind of game. Fans of survival horror, atmospheric world-building, and stories that take their setting seriously will get a lot out of it, especially anyone who liked Metro 2033’s slower, meaner pacing and wants that energy back via Survival mode. It’s less suited to players who want fast, arcade-style shooting or open-world freedom; the Metro games are linear and deliberately claustrophobic, and that’s by design, not a limitation. If you bounced off the original for being too grim or too fiddly with resources, Redux doesn’t fundamentally change that DNA, it just smooths the edges.

Is it worth it?

For the kind of player described above, this is an easy recommendation. You’re getting a complete, self-contained campaign with all its expansion content included, two distinct ways to replay it, and a level of atmosphere that still holds up against newer releases. It’s not a game that needs day-one pricing to justify itself, either.
