About this game

MENACE is a turn-based tactical RPG from Overhype Studios, the team behind Battle Brothers, and it swaps their medieval mercenary sandbox for a stranded military outfit fighting to hold together a cut-off star system. You take command of a Republic Marine Corps strike force sent to pacify a lawless frontier, only to find something far bigger than pirates and corrupt corporations waiting in the dark. The hook is the same thing that made Battle Brothers click: you’re not just winning fights, you’re managing an organization that has to survive on its own terms, far from any backup.

How it plays

You run the show from your strike cruiser, deciding which distress calls to answer, which planets to commit resources to, and how ready your forces actually are before you send them in. Missions aren’t single skirmishes either. Each operation branches across a planet in a sequence of connected battles, so a call to knock out enemy air defenses now might mean a harder fight later, or you could gamble on a direct assault to save hostages and win over a local faction instead. Between fights you’re training troops, fielding tanks, walkers, and infantry squads, and outfitting everyone with whatever gear you’ve scavenged or bought. Relationships matter too: how you treat the criminals, mercenaries, and corporate factions you meet shapes what help they’re willing to offer, whether that’s better intel, hacked enemy tech, or vehicle repair support. It’s equal parts tactics table and logistics puzzle, with consequences that carry from one mission to the next.

Who it’s for

If you liked the slow-burn attrition and hard choices of Battle Brothers, or you just enjoy turn-based tactics games where your roster and resources are as important as your positioning in combat, this is squarely built for you. Fans of squad-based strategy who like branching campaigns instead of a straight mission list will also find a lot to sink into. It’s less of a fit if you want a finished, fully polished experience right away since it’s in Early Access, or if you’re after fast, twitchy action rather than deliberate, turn-based planning.

Is it worth it?

For tactics fans, this is the kind of game where the price feels reasonable simply because of how much strategic depth is packed into managing an entire strike force rather than a single squad. The catch is the Early Access label: you’re buying into a game that’s still being built out, so go in expecting some rough edges and future changes rather than a complete package. That’s exactly the profile of game worth grabbing when it’s discounted rather than at full price, especially if you’re the type who’s happy to grow with a title as it develops instead of needing everything finished on day one.
