About this game

How it plays

Journey of a Roach is a point-and-click adventure set well after the world has already ended, told from the perspective of two cockroaches trying to climb out of a bomb shelter and back into daylight. That framing alone does a lot of work: adventure games love clever, unglamorous protagonists, and there’s something genuinely fun about a genre usually built around detectives and wizards handing the reins to a bug. You control Jim, with Bud tagging along, and the pitch is straightforward but distinctive: instead of walking floors like a person, Jim scuttles across walls and ceilings. That single mechanical choice reshapes how puzzles get built, since sightlines, item placement, and paths through a room all open up in directions a normal adventure game protagonist could never use. Along the way you run into other insects who survived the fallout in their own strange ways, and since roaches don’t exactly hold conversations, the game leans on visual, wordless dialogue exchanges instead of voiced or text-heavy scripts. It’s a classic inventory-and-logic adventure structure underneath, just filtered through an unusually low, crawling point of view and a cast that communicates without a single line of spoken dialogue.

Who it’s for

This one’s aimed squarely at people who already like slower, puzzle-driven adventure games and don’t need constant action to stay engaged. If you enjoy poking around environments, figuring out how pieces of a scene connect, and reading a game’s personality through its art and animation rather than cutscenes, the wall-crawling gimmick and wordless comedy should land well. It’s also a nice pick if you want something a little offbeat, since a post-apocalyptic insect’s-eye-view is not a setting you run into often. If you need combat, real-time challenge, or a fast pace to stay interested, this isn’t that game, and if voiced dialogue and dense narrative exposition are what pull you into a story, the nonverbal approach here might feel thin rather than charming.

Is it worth it?

For fans of the genre, this is the kind of game that’s easy to justify picking up when it shows up in a sale bundle, especially on a storefront like Fanatical where adventure games often get grouped together. It’s a self-contained, single-story experience rather than something with ongoing content, so its value comes down to whether the puzzle design and the wall-crawling gimmick hold your attention for its runtime, and the wordless communication style is a real point of curiosity for anyone who’s played a lot of talkier adventure games. It’s not a game you need to own at full price to appreciate, but it’s a very comfortable addition to a backlog when the price drops, particularly if you’re already stocking up on smaller indie adventures to work through over time.
