About this game
Jetboard Joust is a pixel-art shoot-em-up that trades story cutscenes for wave after wave of alien-blasting mayhem, built around a hover-board that lets you leap, dash, and vaporize enemies in equal measure. It leans hard into the arcade shooter roots of the 80s, but bolts on the run-to-run variety and risk management of modern roguelikes, so no two trips across its planets play out quite the same way.
How it plays
You pilot a jetboard armed with whatever weapon you’ve currently got equipped, and the core rhythm is simple to grasp but hard to master: hop between platforms, leap off your board for a moment of invincibility, and mow down the alien horde trying to abduct civilians and turn them into mutants. The game throws over fifty enemy types at you, each with its own attack pattern, and the boss fights are multi-stage slogs where beating an enemy often means you get to steal its signature move for yourself afterward. Weapons are the real draw here, with more than thirty options ranging from a straightforward shotgun to a flame tornado or a lightning bolt, each with its own upgrade path. Since your loadout changes from run to run, part of the challenge is learning to improvise with whatever you’re handed rather than leaning on one favorite gun. You’ll choose your own route across five planets, hunting for treasure and upgrades to pump into your jetboard, jetsuit, and arsenal, which gives even a straightforward shooting session a light layer of route planning.
Who it’s for
This one’s aimed squarely at people who grew up on coin-op shooters and never lost the taste for twitchy, high-speed reflex gameplay. If you like games that reward pattern recognition and punish hesitation, and you don’t mind that there’s essentially no plot to follow, you’ll feel right at home. Roguelike fans who enjoy building a run out of whatever weapons luck hands them will also find plenty to like in the way loadouts shift each time. On the other hand, if you need a narrative hook to stay invested, or you find twin-stick-style chaos more stressful than fun, this isn’t going to convert you. It’s also worth knowing going in that this is a game built around replaying the same battlegrounds with different tools, not one long story-driven campaign, so players looking for a single linear playthrough might find the structure less satisfying.
Is it worth it?
For the audience that clicks with this kind of game, the sheer number of weapons and enemies to learn gives it real staying power well past a first run. It’s the sort of tightly-focused arcade experience that rewards repeat sessions rather than one long sitting, which makes it a natural fit for picking up during a sale and dipping into whenever you want a quick, high-intensity round instead of committing to a lengthy campaign. If frantic, weapon-driven action games are already your thing, it’s a safe pickup whenever the price drops, since the replay value from the varied loadouts and boss fights means you’ll likely get plenty of mileage out of it. If you’re only mildly curious, it’s still a reasonable low-risk way to see if the genre clicks for you.
