Hitman: Codename 47 is the game that started it all, the first outing for Agent 47 and the one that laid down the blueprint every stealth-assassination game since has been compared to. It’s rough around the edges by modern standards, but it’s also the reason those standards exist in the first place. If you’ve ever wondered where the whole “walk into a level, study it, and murder someone without anyone noticing” genre came from, this is ground zero.

How it plays

You’re dropped into a location with a target, a rough idea of the layout, and a lot of freedom to figure out the rest yourself. The game wants you to plan before you act: scope out patrol routes, work out which door leads where, and decide whether you’re going in with a suit and a syringe or a suitcase full of hardware. Money earned from completed contracts lets you buy better gear for the next job, which gives the campaign a nice sense of progression even though the core idea in every mission stays the same. The story unfolds over a handful of chapters that dig into 47’s background as a genetically engineered assassin, and it takes itself seriously in a way that was fairly novel for an action game at the time. Loud and messy play is always an option, but the game is much more interesting, and more rewarding, when you slow down and treat every level like a puzzle with a body count.

Who it’s for

This one’s for players who like their action games cerebral, the type who’d rather case a level for ten minutes than sprint through it in two. If you enjoy games that reward patience, improvisation, and a bit of trial and error, there’s a lot to like here. It’s also worth playing for anyone curious about game history or the roots of the Hitman series, since you can see the DNA of the later, more polished entries taking shape. That said, if you go in expecting the smooth animations, generous difficulty options, and modern conveniences of the newer Hitman games, you’re going to have a rough time. This is an early-2000s stealth game with early-2000s jank, and it can be unforgiving and a little clunky. Players who want instant gratification or slick modern production values should probably start with a later entry instead.

Is it worth it?

Judged purely as a piece of history, Codename 47 earns its place in anyone’s library who cares about how the stealth genre developed. Judged as a game you’ll sit down and enjoy today, it’s more of a mixed bag, since the systems it introduced have been refined considerably by its own sequels and by everything it inspired. That combination makes it exactly the sort of title you pick up on sale rather than at full price: a low-risk way to see where Agent 47 began without betting much on it. If you’re a genre completionist, a series fan filling in the origin story, or just someone who likes seeing the first draft of an idea that later became great, it’s an easy recommendation once the price comes down.
