About this game

How it plays

FINAL FANTASY VII REMAKE INTERGRADE takes the opening chunk of the 1997 original, the escape from Midgar, and expands it into a full-length game built around a combat system that splits the difference between action and strategy. You’re moving Cloud and the rest of the party around in real time, dodging, guarding, and swinging weapons, but the ATB gauge is always filling in the background, and once it does you can pause the action to dig into a menu of abilities, magic, and items. It rewards playing well in the moment while still giving you the tactical layer FF7 diehards showed up for. This edition also folds in the INTERmission episode, which hands the reins to Yuffie Kisaragi for a separate story about infiltrating Shinra to steal materia, plus a batch of bonus weapons, armor, accessories, and summon materia that get dropped into your Gift Box from the main menu rather than earned through play.

Who it’s for

This one’s aimed squarely at people who want a JRPG with weight behind its combat and a story they can sink hours into. If you grew up with the original and always wondered what Midgar would look like fleshed out into an actual place with actual side stories, this is that. It’s also a fine entry point for newcomers who like character-driven RPGs and don’t mind combat that asks a bit more of them than button mashing. If you find ATB-style pausing fussy, or you’re looking for something you can finish in an afternoon, this isn’t built for that. It’s also worth knowing this only covers the Midgar section of the original story, so anyone expecting the whole FF7 arc in one package should adjust expectations.

Is it worth it?

For the audience that clicks with it, this is a lot of game: a full RPG campaign plus an extra standalone episode and a stack of bonus gear bundled into one purchase. You’re getting the definitive PC version of a game that a lot of people consider one of the better character-focused RPGs of its console generation, and the INTERmission content alone gives it more shelf life than the base story would on its own. It’s the kind of release that holds up well over time rather than aging out of relevance, so catching it during a sale is a smart way to pick it up if you’ve been on the fence. If you already know you like Square Enix’s brand of combat and storytelling, it’s an easy recommendation.
