About this game
Explodemon! is a Curve Studios platformer that takes the SNES-era genre and gives it a very literal gimmick: your character is a walking bomb who fights, moves, and solves puzzles by blowing himself up. It’s a small, cheerful throwback that leans on physics and momentum instead of just precise jumping, and that one idea shapes almost everything about how the game feels to play.
How it plays
You control Explodemon through a series of levels spread across three distinct worlds, and the self-detonation mechanic is the engine behind nearly every interaction. Explode near an enemy and you damage it. Explode in midair and you get a burst of extra momentum, which becomes the game’s stand-in for double jumps and air control. That same trick doubles as a puzzle tool: plenty of rooms expect you to chain blasts off walls, platforms, or hazards to reach a switch or a collectible rather than just running and jumping your way through. As you progress you pick up new skills that build on the base explosion mechanic, which keeps later levels from feeling like more of the same even though the core verb never changes. Between the platforming and puzzle sections there’s a comic-book-style story thread holding the worlds together, played for laughs rather than drama, and the whole thing is built to be played with either a keyboard or a controller.
Who it’s for
This one’s aimed squarely at people who grew up on 16-bit platformers and miss that specific rhythm of tight level design, secret paths, and a steady drip of new abilities. If you like games that reward exploring every corner of a level for a hidden item or an achievement, the collectible and achievement layer gives you a reason to backtrack. It’s also a reasonable pick if you want something with actual puzzle-solving baked into the platforming rather than pure reflex challenges. On the other hand, if physics-based movement isn’t your thing, or you find “figure out the trick to this room” puzzle design more frustrating than fun, this style of platformer is going to wear on you faster than a straightforward run-and-jump game would.
Is it worth it?
For the audience it’s built for, this is the kind of game that earns its keep through sheer level count and the extra mileage of hunting down collectables and achievements rather than through flashy production values. It’s not chasing a modern budget look, and it doesn’t need to, since the appeal is entirely in the design of its levels and how the explosion mechanic keeps evolving. It’s a comfortable fit for a sale purchase: it’s not a game you need to own at full price the day you hear about it, but it’s a solid one to grab when the price drops if you already know you like this genre, and a fine way to fill in a quiet weekend once it’s in your library.
