About this game

Encased drops you into a research facility gone catastrophically wrong, the kind of setup where curiosity about ancient artifacts turns into a fight for survival before lunch. You start as just another employee of the sprawling CRONUS Corporation, and by the end you’re the one deciding what’s left of civilization under the Dome actually becomes. It’s a game about consequences piling up slowly, not about being handed a chosen-one story on day one.

How it plays

You build a character, pick one of CRONUS’s wings, and that choice colors how you’ll approach almost everything afterward, from combat options to how NPCs react to you. From there it’s classic RPG structure filtered through a tactical lens: explore a wasteland shaped by the disaster known as the Incident, scavenge and craft gear, level up your skills, and decide how you want to handle trouble when it shows up. Combat leans tactical rather than twitchy, and the game is upfront that violence isn’t the only tool. A charismatic, silver-tongued build can talk down plenty of fights that a brute would have to shoot through. You can recruit companions with their own personalities and backgrounds to round out your party, or go it alone if you’d rather not manage a squad. Six factions are carving up the ruins, and where you land with them, as friend, rival, or something in between, shapes the world state around you.

Who it’s for

This is a game for people who like their RPGs slower and more deliberate: reading dialogue options carefully, weighing whether a fight is worth starting, and caring about the difference between a diplomatic solution and a violent one. If you grew up on old-school isometric RPGs and miss that pacing, the pitch here is obvious. It’s less obvious for players who want fast, flashy action or a game that holds your hand through its systems. Encased expects you to engage with its faction politics and character building rather than coast through them, so if that sounds like a chore instead of a draw, this probably isn’t your next purchase.

Is it worth it?

For the RPG crowd it’s aimed at, there’s a lot of game here: a full open world, faction relationships that actually branch, companions worth getting attached to, and enough character build variety to justify more than one playthrough. That kind of scope is exactly what makes it a smart pickup when it’s discounted, since the genre rewards patience and replay more than a quick weekend clear. If you’ve been curious about it but weren’t ready to commit at full price, watching for a sale is a reasonable way to go in. Just know upfront that this is a game you sink time into rather than blitz through, so budget your expectations along with your wallet.
