About this game

Dreadlands is a turn-based tactical skirmish game from Blackfox Studios, published by Fatshark, set in a scavenged, post-apocalyptic world where the real prize isn’t territory but a strange resource called Glow. Instead of a single scripted campaign, it drops you into a shared world where three very different gangs claw their way through ruined biomes, fighting each other, the local wildlife, and the environment itself just to get by.

How it plays

Combat runs on a free action point system, so instead of the usual “move, then act” rhythm, you can split your points however you like: shoot, reposition, shoot again, or hold back entirely. That flexibility is the backbone of every fight. Layered on top is a morale system that lets you win engagements by breaking enemy nerve rather than just grinding through hit points, which gives fights a psychological edge most tactics games skip. There’s also an XP challenge system tied to in-match objectives, so how you play a battle, not just whether you win it, feeds your gang’s growth. A tactics card system adds another wrinkle, letting you chain special powers together to swing momentum at the right moment. Outside of combat, you’re exploring a patchwork of grasslands, swamp, desert, and irradiated wasteland, picking a faction (the scrappy Scrappers, beast-taming Tribe-kin, or hulking cybernetic Skarbacks) and working through their own campaign, solo, in co-op, or against other players in PvP.

Who it’s for

This is a game for people who already like tactics games such as XCOM but want more granular control over their turns and a bit more friction in how battles resolve. The morale and action point systems reward players who like to plan several moves ahead rather than just optimizing damage output. If you’re drawn to the setting, a weird, biome-hopping wasteland with distinct factions, that’s a real hook here too. It’s less of a fit if you want a tight, linear single-player story campaign or if turn-based combat with resource management just isn’t your thing. Players who bounce off morale and reputation mechanics in other strategy games should also temper expectations, since it’s central to how fights actually play out here.

Is it worth it?

For strategy fans who enjoy tactical combat with some extra systems layered in (morale, action point flexibility, faction identity) this is the kind of game that rewards patience and repeated play rather than a quick one-and-done. It’s a niche pick within an already niche genre, so going in with realistic expectations about scope matters more than chasing a specific price point. Games like this tend to be best appreciated by people who already know they like the tactics genre, so if you’re on the fence, it’s a reasonable one to wait for a sale on rather than grab at full price on a whim.
