About this game

How it plays

Cultist Simulator strips a Lovecraftian conspiracy story down to a table full of cards. There’s no map to walk, no dialogue tree to click through. You place cards into slots to trigger recipes: a book and a candle might yield a fragment of forbidden lore, a job card generates the money and stability you need to keep going, and left unattended, your own hungers and obsessions start pulling cards of their own. You’re managing time as much as resources, since most actions take real minutes to resolve, which forces you to juggle several schemes at once rather than solving one puzzle at a time. Over a run you found a cult, pull in followers, and push toward one of several competing mysteries, all while dodging the suspicion of ordinary society. Death isn’t necessarily the end of your save either, since a legacy system lets whatever you built carry weight into what comes next.

Who it’s for

This is a game for people who like reading between the lines of a system, the sort of player who enjoyed puzzling out Fallen London’s web of stats and consequences and wants that same feeling in a more compact, replayable shape. If you get a kick out of not being told what a card does until you’ve tried it, and you don’t mind failing a run because you missed something, you’ll be right at home. If you want clear objectives, voice acting, or any kind of action, skip this one. It’s also a rough sell for anyone who bounces off dense text and ambiguous rules, since the game explains almost nothing directly and expects you to build your own mental model through trial and error.

Is it worth it?

For the kind of player drawn to slow-burn discovery, this holds up well over repeated runs, since so much of the appeal comes from figuring things out yourself rather than following a set path. It’s not a long game to finish once, but it’s built to be replayed with different goals and different cults, which stretches its value past a single playthrough. It’s a solid pickup during a sale for anyone curious about narrative card games or Weather Factory’s other work, since the entry cost of learning its systems is lower when you’re not worried about getting every hour out of full price. Newcomers to the genre might want to catch it discounted first, just to see if the opacity clicks for them before committing.
