About this game
Crazy Machines 3 is a Rube Goldberg puzzle game, the kind where you’re handed a half-built contraption and a goal (get a ball into a cup, knock over a statue, whatever the level throws at you) and it’s on you to figure out which leftover gears, ramps, fans, and gizmos make it actually work. Fakt Software has been making these for a long time now, and this third entry leans into full 3D, which changes the puzzle-solving math in a way the older 2D games never had to deal with.
How it plays
Each puzzle drops you into a scene that’s mostly assembled but missing key pieces, and your job is filling the gaps so a chain reaction fires correctly from start to finish. You’re working with real physical systems: electricity, wind, lasers, explosions, the works, and figuring out which force solves which gap is most of the fun. The game also lets you get into the weeds with chip-based tinkering if you want to fine-tune how individual objects behave, and there’s a full editor for building your own parts and machines from scratch. Materials, sizes, colors, rotation, all of it is adjustable, so a plank doesn’t have to stay a plank if you’d rather it be a steel beam. Steam Workshop support means the puzzle supply isn’t capped at whatever ships in the box either, since anyone can upload machines and levels for others to try.
Who it’s for
If you liked The Incredible Machine as a kid, or you’re the type who rearranges furniture in your head before you rearrange it in real life, this is going to scratch that exact itch. It rewards patience and a willingness to fail a setup five times before the sixth one finally clicks. People who want fast action, combat, or a story to follow should look elsewhere: there’s no narrative pull here, just puzzle after puzzle. It’s also worth knowing going in that the toolset is deep, closer to a sandbox than a simple point-and-click puzzler, so if fiddling with settings and chip logic sounds tedious rather than satisfying, this probably isn’t your game.
Is it worth it?
For anyone who genuinely enjoys mechanical puzzle design, this is the kind of game that keeps paying off long after the main set of puzzles is done, thanks to the editor and Workshop content extending its life well past a single playthrough. It’s a niche genre, so it’s not for everyone, but for the audience it’s built for, there’s a real amount of depth packed in here relative to what a lot of puzzle games offer. This is very much a “wait for a sale” genre pick rather than a day-one purchase for most people, since it’s a specific taste and you’ll know within the first couple levels whether it’s clicking for you. If it does click, it’s an easy one to keep coming back to.
