About this game

Crime Cities is a rerelease of a Y2K-era Techland title that mashed together third-person shooting with vehicle combat and never quite got the credit it deserved the first time around. You play Garm Tiger, a federal agent working undercover inside a prison city to find out what happened to the operative sent in before you. It’s a B-movie premise delivered with real ambition: a full branching campaign, dozens of vehicles, and a small arsenal’s worth of weapons, all built during an era when most games were still picking one genre and sticking to it.

How it plays

The hook is the switch between being on foot and being behind the wheel of a futuristic vehicle, often within the same mission. You’re given total freedom of movement in a 3D environment, which for 2000 was a genuinely bold pitch, and the game leans into that by handing you over 100 branching missions across four distinct cities. Add more than 20 weapons and 50 vehicles (each with its own modifications) and you get a loop that keeps shifting the tools in your hands rather than settling into one repeated rhythm. Enemy AI varies mission to mission, so the game asks you to actually adapt instead of running the same playbook every time. Multiplayer isn’t part of the package anymore, so this is strictly a solo run through the campaign.

Who it’s for

This one is for players who get a kick out of gaming archaeology, the kind of person who wants to see how developers were solving the shooter/vehicle-sim combo before it became a genre staple. If you have a soft spot for early-2000s sci-fi noir, prison-city plots, and undercover-agent storylines, the setup will land. It’s also a reasonable pick if you liked Techland’s later, more polished work and are curious where some of that DNA started. If you need modern shooting mechanics, current-gen visuals, or any kind of online play, this isn’t going to scratch that itch, and the missing multiplayer specifically rules it out if that was ever part of the appeal.

Is it worth it?

Judge this one by what it is: a period piece with a genuinely large amount of content packed in, not a slick modern production. For the right player, over 100 missions and a mix of on-foot and vehicle combat across four cities is a lot of game to chew through, and that kind of scope holds up even when the presentation shows its age. It’s the sort of title that rewards curiosity more than it rewards high expectations, so it’s a much easier recommendation to snag when it’s discounted than at full price. If you’re the type who enjoys dipping into gaming history, keep it on your wishlist and grab it whenever it drops into a sale.
