About this game
How it plays
Astray: Zero is a 2D side-scroller built around one idea: keep moving forward, keep fighting. You control Zero, and from the moment you start you have your full toolkit already unlocked, attacking, jumping, dashing, and slowing down time. That bullet time mechanic is the game’s real centerpiece. It’s not on a cooldown or tied to some resource bar, so you can lean on it constantly to thread through enemy attacks and line up hits with a level of precision that would be much harder at normal speed. There’s a health system with five bars, and the game leans into the damage you take rather than just punishing you for it: get hit enough and the screen starts throwing hallucinatory afterimages behind your character as you move, which is a nice bit of visual feedback that doubles as a warning sign. Death isn’t a big setback either. You respawn right back into the level you were on, so momentum doesn’t get killed off by a long walk back to where you died.
Who it’s for
This is a good fit if you like action games but don’t necessarily want them to be brutal. The developer describes the difficulty as low and death as a minor inconvenience, so it reads more like a game about feeling stylish and in control than one about memorizing punishing patterns. If you enjoy the fantasy of slowing time down to dodge and counter with precision, that’s the hook here, and it’s the kind of thing that’s fun in short sessions as much as long ones. On the flip side, if you want a deep skill tree, a sprawling map to get lost in, or a big roster of enemies and abilities to master over dozens of hours, this looks like a leaner experience than that, closer to a focused arcade-style romp than an epic. Fans of hand-painted 2D art will also have something to appreciate, since the visual style is clearly a point of pride here.
Is it worth it?
For what it is, an indie action game with a tight core loop, a handful of enemy types, a set of hand-painted stages, and a genuinely fun bullet time hook, it’s a reasonable pickup for anyone who wants something they can jump into without a big time commitment. It’s not positioning itself as a massive adventure, so go in expecting a compact, mechanically focused experience rather than a sprawling one. That makes it a solid candidate to grab during a sale rather than something you need to rush out and buy at full price the day it launches. If bullet time action and forgiving difficulty sound appealing, it’s worth keeping on a wishlist and snagging when the price dips.
