About this game

ICARUS drops you onto a planet that used to be a triumphant terraforming project and is now widely regarded as humanity’s biggest screwup. You play a prospector working out of an orbital station, dipping down to the surface in timed or open-ended stints to gather resources, build shelter, and try not to get eaten. It’s a survival game with a clear identity: the planet itself is the antagonist, and every trip down is a negotiation with weather, wildlife, and your own oxygen supply.

How it plays

The loop starts simple and gets complicated fast. You land, scavenge materials, and start crafting your way up from basic tools toward advanced composites and electronics, working through four tiers of technology and more than eight building materials. Along the way you’re managing oxygen, hunger, and exposure while the planet throws toxic air, storms, forest fires, and apex predators at you. Taming and breeding animals gives you mounts, hunting help, or farm stock, and there are over a hundred talents to spend points on as you lean into building, taming, fighting, or exploration. You can play solo, with up to eight friends, or on a dedicated server, and you can experience the game’s narrative questlines either as standalone timed Missions or as “Operations” woven into a persistent Open World, so the story content is the same no matter which structure you prefer. There’s also an Outposts mode for players who want to build without the mission pressure.

Who it’s for

If you like your survival games with teeth, meaning real stakes for going in unprepared, ICARUS should scratch that itch. The layered tech trees and long-term taming and farming systems reward players who enjoy planning several steps ahead and don’t mind a learning curve. It’s also a genuinely good pick for a small co-op group looking for something with more structure than a pure sandbox survival game.
