Grim Dawn has been getting bigger for years, and Fangs of Asterkarn is the latest chunk of world grafted onto Crate Entertainment’s grim, loot-soaked action RPG. This expansion sends you west into snowy, corruption-choked territory that belongs to the Kurn, a people whose history is more blood-soaked than the marketing usually lets on. If you already know Grim Dawn’s formula of hoarding gear, building absurd skill combos, and grinding your way through hostile terrain, this is more of that, in a colder and meaner setting.

How it plays

The loop is still classic Grim Dawn: fight through dangerous regions, loot everything, and constantly tinker with your build. Asterkarn adds frozen caverns, forest valleys, and hot springs to explore, all wrapped around a central conflict as you negotiate with Kurn tribes and get pulled into old grudges you didn’t ask to inherit. The headline addition is Berserker, a tenth mastery that leans into shapeshifting and close-range savagery, and since Grim Dawn’s masteries combine in pairs, that pushes the total number of build combinations into the dozens. For players who want a harder ceiling, there’s an Ascendant mode that reworks the campaign’s dungeons and bosses to actually punish overleveled characters, plus ascension mechanics for gear that let you keep pushing items past their normal caps. On the crafting side, potions become something you can customize instead of just chugging, and affix transmutation lets you reroll magic and rare items instead of hoping the next drop is better. If you’re invested in the endgame content, the Crucible gets extra waves and the Shattered Realm expands with new areas and boss arenas to grind through.

Who it’s for

This is built for people who already love Grim Dawn’s itemization and build crafting and want a reason to boot the game back up. If you get genuine satisfaction from theorycrafting a weird two-mastery combo or you’ve cleared the existing endgame content and want fresh challenge, this is squarely aimed at you. It’s not a good starting point, though. Fangs of Asterkarn requires both the Forgotten Gods and Ashes of Malmouth expansions to even run, so newcomers need to buy into the whole ecosystem first. If you bounced off Grim Dawn’s dense skill trees or found its combat too methodical for your taste, more world and more masteries won’t change your mind.

Is it worth it?

For the ARPG faithful, this is the kind of expansion that justifies itself through sheer volume: a new mastery, a meaningfully larger map, harder endgame modes, and hundreds of new items to chase. That’s a lot of hours for anyone who enjoys optimizing builds and hunting for the perfect legendary. Because it’s a DLC layered onto a game that already requires two other DLCs, it’s worth waiting for a sale if you’re not already deep into Grim Dawn, since you’re really evaluating the whole package rather than just this one add-on.
