Black Ops drops you into a Cold War era campaign built around deniable operations, the kind of missions a government can disavow if things go sideways. You’re playing an operator inside an elite unit, moving between hotspots and getting access to period-accurate weapons and gear as the story escalates. It’s a scripted, linear campaign in the classic Call of Duty mold: tight pacing, big set pieces, a story that wants you to keep pushing forward rather than wander off and explore. Multiplayer is where Treyarch pushed the series further, adding deeper customization options on top of the usual run-and-gun combat, along with Wager Matches for players who want to bet their in-game currency on their own skill, Combat Training for easing into the multiplayer meta without getting steamrolled by strangers, and Theater mode for reviewing your own matches. Then there’s Zombies, tacked on almost as a bonus but beloved enough that it became a series staple in its own right: cooperative or solo survival against waves of the undead, built for the kind of session where you just keep saying “one more round.”
