About this game

Gurei is a boss-rush action game about a spirit named Rei who has to hunt down and defeat a series of nature deities called Kami, each fight handing her a piece of their power. The hook is that you choose the order yourself, and the game quietly reshapes each Kami’s difficulty around the path you take through them. Fight one early and it might be a warm-up. Save that same one for last, after your build has grown around different choices, and it can turn into the hardest fight in the run. It’s a clever spin on the boss-rush format from Lobo Sagaz studio, wrapped in a strange, dreamlike castle sitting between the human and spirit worlds.

How it plays

At the ground level, Rei fights with a sword, dodges, and head stomps, the kind of vocabulary anyone who’s played an action game will recognize instantly. What changes the shape of combat is what happens after each Kami falls. Every defeated deity teaches Rei a new skill, whether that’s a faster dash, a weapon capable of finishing enemies outright, or a healing ability, and those skills stack into your personal toolkit for the fights still ahead. Since you’re free to sequence the bosses however you like, you’re essentially building your own difficulty curve and your own arsenal at the same time. Beat the wrong (or right) Kami too early and you might be undergunned for what comes next. Between fights, the castle itself opens up a little more, introducing figures out of Japanese folklore who hand out side objectives, odd bits of lore, and secrets worth poking at if straight boss fighting isn’t the only thing you’re after. There’s also a running commentary track from the Kami you’ve already beaten, who tag along and talk, sometimes helpfully, sometimes not.

Who it’s for

This is built for players who like tightly designed boss encounters and want some say in how brutal their runs get. If you enjoyed picking your own order in something like Mega Man or Hollow Knight’s optional bosses, and you like the idea of your choices actively reshaping enemy difficulty rather than just unlocking cosmetic variety, Gurei is aimed squarely at you. The folklore dressing and the chatty defeated-Kami gimmick give it some personality beyond pure combat, which should appeal to players who want a little narrative texture around their boss rush. If you’re after a long open world to wander, or you find boss-heavy games with limited traversal exhausting rather than exciting, this probably isn’t going to click. It also sounds like a game that punishes careless sequencing, so players who bounce off trial-and-error difficulty spikes should go in aware of that.

Is it worth it?

For the player it’s built for, a boss-rush fan who wants replay value baked into the structure rather than bolted on, Gurei looks like a smart, focused package. The fact that your first playthrough’s order genuinely changes the challenge means a second run isn’t just repeating content, it’s a different game. That kind of built-in replayability is exactly the sort of thing worth grabbing when it’s discounted, since indie boss-rush titles like this tend to reward patience: let it collect a few reviews, watch for it in a Steam sale, and jump in once you know the combat feel lines up with your taste. It’s not the kind of game you need to pay full price to feel good about owning.
