About this game

Tears of Metal is an Early Access action game from Paper Cult that drops you into a Scottish battalion fighting to take back an island overrun by invaders after a meteor event cracked open something called the Mother Dragon Stone. You can go it alone or team up with up to three friends, and the whole thing runs on the kind of run based structure where every attempt at the campaign hands you a fresh set of powers to build around. The hook is straightforward: hack through waves of enemies, grab increasingly ridiculous combinations of upgrades, and slowly turn your ragtag militia into something that can actually push the occupiers off your land.

How it plays

Each campaign sends you across the island’s battlefields carving through hordes of enemies while picking up upgrades that stack with over a hundred artifacts, so no two runs play quite the same. You pick from multiple heroes, each with their own attack style, and the power creep within a single run is clearly meant to escalate fast as you chain artifact combos into bigger and bigger hits. Outside of combat, there’s a settlement to grow between campaigns, unlocking new shops, permanent upgrades, and tougher optional challenges for better rewards. Your soldiers matter too: recruit them, send them into battle, and they earn permanent skills as they survive, so the troops you’re leading in campaign five are genuinely stronger than the ones you started with. Paper Cult says there are over 45 handcrafted environments to fight through, with room for different objectives and scenarios inside them, and co-op lets friends drop into your campaign to share in the same progression.

Who it’s for

If you like games that reward experimenting with build synergies, the kind where you’re constantly asking “what if I combine this artifact with that one,” this scratches that itch with a co-op twist that a lot of similar games skip. Fans of horde combat, roguelite style progression, and games where you’re building up a persistent base of soldiers between runs will feel right at home. It’s also worth having a squad in mind, since four player co-op sounds like where the game is really meant to shine. If you’d rather have a tightly scripted single player story, or you’re wary of Early Access titles that are still finding their footing, this might be one to watch from a distance for now rather than jump into immediately.

Is it worth it?

For players who already know they love this genre, an action game built around stacking artifacts and growing a permanent roster of soldiers is the kind of thing that can eat dozens of hours, especially with friends along for the ride. Early Access always carries the usual caveat that content and balance will keep shifting, so go in expecting some rough edges rather than a fully polished final product. That said, games in this loot and build genre tend to hold their value well over time since the replay loop doesn’t really expire, which makes Tears of Metal a solid candidate to grab whenever it’s discounted rather than something you need at full price on day one.
