What is it

Nobody Wants to Die drops you into New York in 2329, a city where dying isn’t really the end anymore, not if you can pay for the privilege of coming back. You play James Karra, a detective with the Mortality Department who’s fresh off a near-death experience of his own, working a case his chief never officially assigned him. His only backup is Sara Kai, a young police liaison who ends up being more essential to the investigation than either of them expects. It’s a noir mystery wearing sci-fi clothes, and the hook isn’t the future tech so much as what that tech does to people once death stops being permanent.

How it plays

This is an investigation game built around walking into crime scenes and piecing together what happened. Karra has a time manipulation augmentation that lets him reconstruct the moments leading up to a murder, rewinding and scrubbing through a scene to catch details a normal detective would miss. You’re reading rooms, gathering clues, and following the thread from the pointed end (a body) back toward whoever’s responsible, all while the story digs into the city’s wealthy elite and what they’ve been willing to do to stay alive forever. It’s built in Unreal Engine 5, so expect the visuals to carry a lot of the mood, dim lighting, rain-soaked streets, that kind of thing, while the writing does the heavy lifting on tone.

Who it’s for

If you liked the slower, cerebral side of detective games, the kind where the reward is understanding rather than reflexes, this is aimed squarely at you. Fans of noir fiction and speculative sci-fi about immortality and identity will find plenty to chew on here.
