Larry Laffer is back, except this time he’s woken up decades out of his depth. CrazyBunch’s revival of the classic point-and-click series drops the eternally unlucky lothario out of the 1980s and straight into the smartphone era, where dating happens through an app called Timber and everyone’s opinion of him is one swipe away from disaster. The hook is basically a fish-out-of-water story: an analog guy from an analog decade trying to figure out how modern romance, modern tech, and modern social mores actually work, all while chasing a woman named Faith who works for a tech company called Prune. It’s silly on purpose, and it knows exactly what kind of game it’s supposed to be.

How it plays

This is a traditional point-and-click adventure at heart, built around exploring a hand-drawn world, talking to characters, picking up items, and solving puzzles to move the story forward. The twist for this entry is the in-game Timber app, which acts as the dating layer of the game. You use it to meet women, work out what they’re looking for, and build up your Timber score, and that score is effectively your progress meter toward eventually reaching Faith. There’s also an Instacrap app for browsing photos on the side, which fits the game’s general habit of poking fun at app culture rather than treating it seriously. The world itself is described as non-linear, spread across more than 30 illustrated locations with over 30 characters to interact with, so there’s a reasonable amount of ground to cover between story beats.

Who it’s for

If you grew up with the older Leisure Suit Larry games or just have a soft spot for crude, innuendo-heavy adventure comedy, this is squarely aimed at you. Fans of classic LucasArts-style puzzle solving, dialogue-driven humor, and games that don’t take themselves seriously will find familiar footing here. It’s also a decent fit for anyone curious about how a very 80s character gets reworked for a smartphone-and-app world, since that culture clash is the whole joke. On the other hand, if raunchy humor isn’t your thing, or you’re looking for a tightly paced modern narrative adventure without dated shock comedy, you’ll probably want to pass.
