Call of Duty: Black Ops III landed in 2015 as Treyarch’s most sprawling entry yet, stitching together a full campaign, a competitive multiplayer suite, and the Zombies mode the studio had spent two console generations refining. It’s the kind of package that tries to be three games in one box, and for a lot of players it actually pulled that off. If you’re looking for a single Call of Duty release that covers every mood you might be in on a given night, this is one of the few that genuinely tries.

How it plays

The structure is straightforward: pick your mode and settle in. Campaign missions push a near-future, cybernetically enhanced soldier story that leans harder into movement and gadgetry than earlier Black Ops games. Multiplayer keeps the series’ familiar loadout-and-killstreak rhythm while adding faster vertical traversal to the maps. Zombies stands as its own thing entirely, a wave-survival mode built around scavenging, upgrading, and learning map-specific puzzles with a crew of friends. Later editions of this release folded in the Zombies Chronicles expansion, which rebuilt eight classic Zombies maps pulled from World at War, Black Ops, and Black Ops II in HD, so veterans of those older games get a genuine trip back through the mode’s history without needing to track down the original discs.

Who it’s for

This one’s built for people who actually want variety in their shooter. If you bounce between wanting a story to chew through, a multiplayer session to unwind with, and a co-op mode to grind out with friends, Black Ops III covers all three without asking you to buy separate games. Zombies fans in particular get rewarded here, since the classic map remasters are a big part of the draw for anyone who’s been playing since the World at War days. On the other hand, if you’re strictly a competitive multiplayer player chasing the newest movement systems and current player pools, you’ll get more mileage out of a newer Call of Duty release. And if fast, chaotic wave-based survival with a learning curve doesn’t appeal to you, the Zombies content won’t be much of a selling point.

Is it worth it?

For anyone who fits the profile above, this is a lot of content bundled into one purchase, especially once the Zombies Chronicles maps are factored in. You’re getting a full campaign, a complete multiplayer suite, and a Zombies mode with a decade of map history behind it, which is a rare combination for one Call of Duty release. It’s exactly the type of older, content-dense title that makes the most sense to pick up during a sale rather than at full price, since its value comes from how much you’ll actually sink into it over time rather than from being the newest thing on the shelf. If Zombies or classic-era Call of Duty multiplayer appeals to you at all, it’s worth adding to your library when the price drops.
