Contraband Police puts you behind a border checkpoint in 1981, in a fictional Eastern Bloc-style country called Acaristan, where your job is to decide who gets to cross and who doesn’t. It’s the kind of premise that sounds like a spreadsheet exercise until you remember that every decision you make, right or wrong, has consequences, and that the people on the other side of your booth window aren’t always who they claim to be.

How it plays

The backbone of the game is document inspection: travelers hand over their papers, and you have to spot the inconsistencies, the wrong stamp, the mismatched date, the expired permit, before waving them through or turning them away. As you progress, the paperwork gets more complicated and the mistakes get harder to catch, so you’re constantly sharpening your attention to detail. That alone would make for a tense little loop, but the game layers more on top of it. Tips about suspicious vehicles send you out with a UV flashlight to search cars for hidden contraband, digging through panels and compartments to find what smugglers are trying to sneak past you. Some of those encounters turn violent, and you’ll end up in firefights defending your post or chasing down drivers who bolt rather than submit to inspection, which means buying and upgrading police vehicles to keep pace with them. Between shifts, you manage your station itself, improving its defenses and its inspection tools, all funded by the money you earn from doing your job well. Story missions and special assignments break up the routine further, dropping you into investigations and decisions that shape how the larger conflict in Acaristan plays out.

Who it’s for

If you liked the tension of scrutinizing documents in games built around that kind of scrutiny, this will feel familiar, except stretched into a fuller world with combat, driving, and base management layered around the core inspection work. It rewards patience and a good eye, and it’s got a genuine sense of atmosphere thanks to its Cold War era setting. Players who want a straightforward shooter or a fast-paced action game should look elsewhere. This is slower and more procedural by design, with action sequences that punctuate the routine rather than define it. If checking paperwork for errors sounds tedious rather than tense to you, the rest of the game probably won’t win you over either.

For players who enjoy this specific blend of scrutiny, management, and occasional chaos, there’s a lot packed into one job description: inspections, searches, upgrades, chases, and a story that develops around all of it.
