About this game
I Am Fish takes the “escape the fishbowl” premise and builds an entire physics playground around it. You’re not steering one fish but four, each one trying to get from a pet shop tank back to the open ocean, and the game hands you a fresh set of problems every time it switches between them. It’s a weird, specific idea, and Bossa Studios (the team behind Surgeon Simulator and I Am Bread) leans hard into that weirdness rather than smoothing it out.
How it plays
The core loop is get your fish from point A to point B without it drying out, getting squashed, or falling out of whatever container is currently keeping it alive. Sometimes that container is a proper fish tank, sometimes it’s a jar rolling down a hill or a bucket someone left on a cart, and the physics-based controls mean momentum and balance matter as much as timing. Each of the four fish handles differently: the goldfish just swims, the pufferfish inflates and rolls, the piranha bites its way through obstacles, and the flying fish glides. That variety is really the whole hook, since you’re constantly relearning how to move as you swap between them on the way through rooftops, roads, and other very un-aquatic terrain. Mess up and you don’t get a graphic death scene, you just pop back to the last checkpoint and try the section again with better judgment.
Who it’s for
This is a good fit if you liked the controlled chaos of I Am Bread or Surgeon Simulator and want something with a bit more forward momentum and less pure slapstick frustration. It also plays well for co-op minded groups or as a couch game to hand to someone who doesn’t normally play platformers, since the premise alone gets a laugh. If you want tight, precise controls or a game that respects your first attempt at anything, this probably isn’t it. The physics are deliberately fiddly, and that’s the joke as much as it’s the challenge, so people who get annoyed rather than amused by wobbly controls should look elsewhere.
Is it worth it?
For what it is, a short, funny, physics-comedy adventure with four distinct movement styles, it delivers a good chunk of novelty for a relatively low buy-in. It’s not a game you’ll sink dozens of hours into, and it’s not trying to be. That makes it exactly the kind of title worth grabbing when it’s discounted rather than at full price: a fun weekend romp that doesn’t need to justify a big price tag to be worth your time. Since it does show up in Xbox sales periodically, patience tends to pay off here.
