About this game
Duskfade is a 2D action platformer about a kid named Zirian trying to pull his sister back from something called Despair, which sounds ominous in exactly the right way for this kind of game. The pitch is straightforward: time is broken, a bunch of mysterious clockmakers built the world you’re running through, and you’re going to jump, fight, and explore your way to fixing both. Weird Beluga (published by Fireshine Games) is clearly working in a lineage of hand-crafted action platformers, and the hook here is less “revolutionary mechanic” and more “tight movement plus a story with some actual weight to it.”
How it plays
At the heart of it, Duskfade is built around movement and combat working together rather than as separate modes you switch between. You’ve got jumping, dashing, grappling, and gliding as your traversal toolkit, and the game leans on those tools to get you through platforming sections that ramp up in difficulty as you go. Combat is described as fast-paced, which paired with that movement kit suggests fights that keep you airborne and mobile rather than planted in one spot trading hits. You’ll move through a handful of distinct biomes, forests, underwater areas, desert dunes, and high-altitude cloud regions among them, each with its own look and presumably its own platforming quirks. Alongside the action there’s a narrative throughline about grief and growing up, with a cast of characters who each seem to represent a different emotional obstacle Zirian has to work through, not just a different boss fight.
Who it’s for
If you grew up on Metroidvania-adjacent platformers and still get a kick out of nailing a tricky dash-jump-grapple sequence, this is squarely aimed at you. It’s also a good fit if you want your platforming with some emotional stakes attached rather than just score-chasing or speedrunning. On the other hand, if you find precision platforming frustrating rather than satisfying, or you’re after something more open-world and sprawling, this probably isn’t going to convert you. It reads as a fairly focused, story-driven experience rather than a massive time sink, so go in expecting craft and mood over scale.
Is it worth it?
For fans of the genre, a well-built action platformer with real narrative ambition is exactly the kind of game worth having in your library, especially since these tend to hold up on replay once you’ve got the movement fully in your hands. It’s not the sort of game that demands full price out of curiosity alone, but it’s also not a title you should sleep on if it lands in your wishlist. Games like this are a natural fit for picking up on sale: the core appeal (tight controls, a handful of memorable worlds, a story that sticks with you) doesn’t really diminish over time, so there’s no urgency to buy in at launch pricing if you’re patient. If you already know you like this style of platformer, it’s a safe pickup whenever the price feels right to you.
