About this game
Black Myth: Wukong takes the most famous troublemaker in Chinese folklore and puts you directly in his golden-furred shoes. It’s an action RPG built around Journey to the West, but instead of retelling the novel scene by scene, it drops you into the aftermath, chasing pieces of a legend that got scattered and buried. The hook isn’t nostalgia for the source material, it’s the promise of fighting your way through a world built entirely from that mythology’s imagery: temples, demons, gods, and every strange creature in between.
How it plays
You’re the Destined One, and combat runs through a staff, Wukong’s signature weapon, layered with spells and shapeshifting abilities you pick up along the way. The idea is to mix and match: some abilities counter what an enemy throws at you, others amplify your own damage, and figuring out which combination clicks against a given foe is the real puzzle underneath the swordplay. Bosses draw straight from the novel’s rogues’ gallery of monsters and rival spirits, and the game leans hard into making each one feel like a distinct fight rather than a reskinned encounter. Beyond the boss battles, exploration carries its own weight, with the world itself changing dramatically from one region to the next, so wandering off the main path is part of the appeal rather than filler between fights.
Who it’s for
If you like action games that ask you to actually learn an enemy’s rhythm before you beat them, staff-and-magic combat with real depth to experiment with, or you’ve got any curiosity about Chinese mythology beyond what you’ve seen in other media, this is squarely built for you. Souls-like fans will feel at home with the pacing and the weight of individual encounters. It’s less of a fit if you’re looking for something breezy or forgiving, or if you’d rather play a game that lets you set your own difficulty and stroll through the story. This one wants your attention on every fight.
Is it worth it?
For the audience this is made for, action RPG players who want distinctive boss encounters and a world that doesn’t look like anywhere else in the genre, it earns its keep. The combination of striking, myth-based environments and a combat system with real room to specialize is the kind of thing that rewards the time you put into it rather than punishing you for it. It’s not a pick-up-and-forget game, so it makes the most sense for people who actually plan to sit with it for a while rather than sample it and move on. As with most substantial single-player action games, it’s the type of title where waiting for a sale isn’t a bad instinct if you’re budget-conscious, but if the setting and combat style already sound like your thing, there’s no real reason to hold off.
