About this game
The Lord of the Rings: War in the North Legacy Edition takes you off the well-worn path of the Fellowship and drops you into a fight most of the books and films never show you: the defense of the North while Frodo and Sam are busy trudging toward Mordor. Aspyr Media’s re-release puts you and up to two other players in control of a trio of heroes standing against Agandaûr, a Black Númenórean commander who has built an army out of the ruins of Fornost. It’s a chance to feel like Middle-earth is bigger than one ring and one road, and that other people were fighting and dying while the story you already know was unfolding somewhere else.
How it plays
You pick from three heroes, each built around a distinct combat role, and you can swap between them on the fly: Eradan the Dúnedain Ranger for stealth and precise ranged and melee kills, Andriel the Elven Loremaster for healing and area magic, and Farin the Dwarven Champion for straightforward, heavily armored brawling. That split matters most in co-op, where a group can genuinely divide labor instead of everyone playing the same character in different colors, but split-screen and online options mean you’re not locked into a full party to enjoy it. Outside of combat there’s a real RPG layer under the hood, with skills, abilities, and loot to chase so your version of Eradan or Farin ends up looking different from anyone else’s. Beleram, a Great Eagle, shows up as a way to turn the tide when a fight gets ugly, and the campaign runs through recognizable Middle-earth locations like Rivendell, Lórien, the Lonely Mountain, and Mirkwood, with familiar faces such as Aragorn, Gandalf, and Elrond popping up along the way.
Who it’s for
This one’s for people who love the LOTR setting but want it filtered through something bloodier and less polite than the films, and for anyone who’s been hunting for a co-op action RPG they can actually play with two other friends without waiting for a fourth. If you grew up on hack-and-slash loot games and always wished one of them was set in Middle-earth, this is squarely built for you. If you’re after a strict, faithful retelling of Tolkien’s actual plot, or you only play solo and don’t care much for RPG progression systems, it’s going to feel like it’s aimed at someone else.
Is it worth it?
Games built around three-character co-op tend to earn their keep the moment you’ve got a couple of friends who are actually willing to sit down and play together, since that’s where the character variety and the loot chase start pulling their weight. Played solo, the appeal narrows to how much you want a grittier, war-focused slice of Middle-earth and how much you enjoy the genre’s usual loop of fighting, looting, and upgrading. It’s the kind of title that’s easy to recommend picking up when it’s discounted rather than at full price, especially if your interest is casual curiosity rather than a firm plan to run the whole campaign with a set group.
