About this game

Van Helsing casts you as the descendant of the famous monster hunter, dropped into the gaslit, gothic city of Borgovia where science has gone feral and the line between man and monster keeps blurring. It’s an action RPG with a sense of humor about itself, and that combination of grim setting and light touch is a big part of why it’s stuck around as a cult favorite since NeocoreGames put it out in 2013.

How it plays

This is a top-down action RPG in the loot-and-level mold: you fight through Borgovia’s wilderness and industrial districts, gaining skills and abilities as Van Helsing while building out a proper character build over time. What sets it apart from a generic hack-and-slash is Lady Katarina, your ghostly companion, who fights alongside you and can be shaped with her own set of abilities, so you’re really managing two characters at once rather than just one hero mowing through crowds. On top of the standard leveling path, there’s an alchemy system for crafting gear and a base-building layer where you fortify your hideout and set traps to survive monster waves, which gives the game a bit of a tower-defense breather between the main hunting missions. If you want company, the whole campaign can be tackled with friends, which changes the pacing quite a bit since fights get chaotic fast with more hunters on screen.

Who it’s for

If you like action RPGs but get tired of the usual dour fantasy trappings, the gothic-noir setting and the writing’s sense of humor make this an easy recommendation. Fans of the genre’s build-crafting side will also find enough here to chew on, between the skill trees, the power-up tweaking, and the alchemy system.
