About this game
Wait, I should not output an empty h2. Let me write the actual article body directly.
The Incredible Adventures of Van Helsing II picks up right where the first game left off, dropping you back into a steampunk-gothic world that’s basically Van Helsing meets Diablo meets a mad scientist’s fever dream. NeocoreGames doubles down on the action-RPG formula here, throwing you back into Borgova as the monster hunter deals with the fallout of taking down one villain, only to find a whole new threat rising in the chaos. If you liked the tone and combat of the original, this is more of that, but bigger and with a lot more systems bolted on.
How it plays
At the base level this is a loot-driven action-RPG: you pick one of three classes (the gun-and-melee Hunter, the spellcasting Thaumaturge, or the gadget-heavy Arcane Mechanic), then go smash through hordes of enemies while gear and skills pile up. What sets it apart from a generic hack-and-slash is how much extra stuff NeocoreGames wraps around that loop. Your ghostly companion Katarina fights alongside you with her own skill trees, so you’re managing two characters’ builds at once. The Hunter’s Lair acts as your home base for trading, forging, and running an alchemy lab, and it doubles as the hub for a genuinely different tower-defense mode where you place traps to fend off invading waves. On top of that there’s a Resistance-management layer where you’re outfitting allied troops, plus runecrafting that lets you break down items into magical fragments and rebuild them into new gear. There’s also a rage system that lets you charge up modifiers on your active skills mid-fight. It’s a lot of moving parts for what looks on the surface like a straightforward loot game.
Who it’s for
This one’s aimed squarely at people who like their action-RPGs busy: if you enjoy min-maxing skill trees, tinkering with a companion’s build alongside your own, and jumping between combat and base management, there’s a lot here to sink time into. Fans of the gothic-noir setting and the slightly campy, self-aware tone of the series will feel right at home too. If you just want clean, minimal hack-and-slash combat without extra systems to manage, or you’re not into the whole steampunk-monster-hunter aesthetic, this is going to feel like more homework than fun. It’s also worth knowing going in that this is a sequel, so having some familiarity with the first game’s setup helps, even though the story stands reasonably on its own.
Is it worth it?
For the crowd that actually wants all those extra systems, this delivers a lot of content and replayability across three distinct classes plus a companion to build around. It’s the kind of game where the tower-defense side mode and Resistance management alone could eat up hours if you’re into that stuff, on top of the core loot grind. If you’re on the fence, it’s exactly the sort of RPG that makes more sense to pick up during a sale rather than at full price, since the appeal is pretty genre-specific and you’ll know within an hour or two whether the mix of systems clicks for you. For genre fans, though, it’s a solid amount of game for what it asks.
