Van Helsing III wraps up NeocoreGames’ gothic action-RPG trilogy set in the fog-choked city of Borgovia, and it does so by narrowing the focus rather than widening it. The civil war that drove the earlier games is technically over, but the peace is worse than the war: factions are carving up the ruins, a doomsday cult is stirring up trouble, and Van Helsing’s old ally has turned into the game’s central threat. It’s a smaller, more personal story than you might expect from a trilogy closer, and that’s actually its strongest card.

How it plays

This is an isometric action-RPG in the vein of Diablo-likes, built around picking one of six classes and hacking, shooting, or hexing your way through waves of enemies. You’ve got a melee bruiser in the Protector, a ranged specialist in the Bounty Hunter, a gadget-and-science hybrid in the Phlogistoneer, a turret-and-trap Constructor, a spellcasting Elementalist, and a stealth-leaning Umbralist, so the class choice actually changes how a given fight plays out rather than just skinning the same combat loop. Leveling up unlocks new skills and gear, and the game leans on build customization to keep runs feeling distinct from one class to the next. You’re not doing this alone, either: Katarina, your companion from the earlier games, tags along with running commentary, and the story finally digs into her backstory. There’s a physical Borgovia to explore and a stranger dimension called the Ink layered on top of it, giving the campaign a bit of variety beyond just clearing rooms of monsters. If you’d rather fight people than monsters, there’s PvP for up to eight players, and the whole campaign supports four-player co-op if you want to bring friends along for the story instead.

If you like loot-driven action-RPGs and want one with an actual sense of humor and a story it takes semi-seriously, this fits the bill. Fans of the first two Van Helsing games get the most out of it since it’s built as a direct payoff to that story, but the gothic-steampunk setting and class variety make it approachable even if you’re coming in cold.
