About this game

Anomaly 2 is one of the few games that flips the tower defense formula on its head and actually makes it stick. You’re not sitting behind static turrets waiting for waves to come to you; you’re pushing a convoy of war machines through enemy territory, and the towers are the obstacles you have to route around, disable, or smash through. It’s the sequel to Anomaly Warzone Earth, set on a frozen, alien-occupied Earth where humanity has become the invasive species on its own planet, and it builds on that original idea instead of just repeating it.

How it plays

You command a convoy moving through hostile, tower-lined streets, picking your route and adjusting tactics on the fly rather than sitting back and clicking upgrades. The big addition here is morphing: each vehicle in your convoy can transform into a war mech, and that mech form changes what it’s good at, so you’re constantly reshuffling your squad’s composition to answer whatever the enemy throws at you. Squad building is deep enough that you can approach the same level with a genuinely different lineup and get a different fight out of it. On top of the single-player campaign, which pushes the strategy further than the original game did and even branches into different endings depending on how you play, there’s an asymmetric multiplayer mode where one player controls the towers and the other leads the convoy trying to destroy them. That role-reversal mode is really the hook of the whole package.

Who it’s for

If you like strategy games that reward planning a route and adapting mid-fight over games that reward twitch reflexes, this is worth your time. Fans of tower defense who’ve always wondered what the other side of the battlefield feels like will get the most out of it, since the multiplayer mode is built entirely around that curiosity. It also suits people who want a strategy game they can actually finish, since the campaign has a clear arc and an ending (or two) rather than an endless ladder. It’s less suited to players who want deep base-building or economy management typical of traditional RTS games, since the focus here stays tight on convoy movement and squad composition rather than resource sprawl. If you bounced off the pacing of the first Anomaly game, this won’t fundamentally change your mind, it refines the same core idea rather than reinventing it.

Is it worth it?

For what it is, a tightly scoped strategy game from a studio that clearly understood its own idea well enough to iterate on it once, this holds up as a solid pickup, especially if strategy games with a real hook are your thing. It’s not a massive, sprawling RTS you’ll sink hundreds of hours into, so judge it by the quality of its central idea rather than sheer content volume. Games like this are exactly the kind of thing worth grabbing during a sale rather than paying full price for on day one now, since the campaign length and single, clever multiplayer mode mean you’re paying for a focused experience rather than an endless one. If the tower offense concept sounds interesting to you at all, it’s a safe bet whenever it’s discounted.
