About this game

This Book Is A Dungeon is a text-driven horror crawler from developer Nathan Meunier, built in Twine and dressed up with grim pixel art. It’s less a game about reflexes and more a game about reading carefully, making a choice, and living (or, far more often, not living) with the consequences. If you grew up on old choose-your-own-adventure books but wish someone had added combat stats and a body horror obsession, this is aimed squarely at you.

How it plays

You move through a branching, text-based dungeon one passage at a time, reading short bursts of unsettling prose and picking from a handful of options at each turn. Underneath the interactive fiction shell sits a layer of light RPG mechanics, so you’re tracking an inventory and handling combat encounters alongside the narrative choices, rather than just clicking through story. Death comes often and comes fast, and it’s built into the design rather than treated as a failure state to avoid. The game expects you to die repeatedly, learn what a path leads to, and try again with that knowledge. Because so many routes exist and only some of them are visible on any one run, a single playthrough won’t show you everything the dungeon has to offer. It rewards curiosity and a willingness to backtrack into passages you skipped the first time. The Steam release also bundles a lengthy written dev diary covering how the whole thing came together, which is a nice extra for anyone curious about the making-of side of a small interactive fiction project.

Who it’s for

This is for people who like reading, honestly. If you enjoy dark fiction, gallows humor, and puzzles that live in the text rather than in physics or reflexes, the format will click fast. Fans of old-school interactive fiction, horror anthologies, and games that aren’t afraid to be genuinely grim will find a lot to like here. It’s also a good fit if you appreciate permadeath-style structures where dying is part of learning the world rather than a punishment to be avoided at all costs. On the other hand, if you need voice acting, animation, or moment-to-moment action to stay engaged, this will feel thin. It’s also explicitly not for anyone squeamish about graphic, disturbing content: the horror here leans hard into body horror and occult imagery, and it doesn’t soften that for a general audience.

Is it worth it?

Given how text-heavy and replay-dependent this is, its value comes from how much you enjoy rereading and re-exploring rather than from raw hours of new content per dollar. For someone who actually likes this kind of interactive fiction, tracing new branches and collecting the various grim endings is the whole appeal, and that can occupy a satisfying chunk of time even in a compact package. It’s the kind of smaller, unusual indie title that’s easy to recommend picking up when it’s discounted, since it lets you try the format without much financial risk, and the included dev diary sweetens the deal for anyone interested in solo development. If narrative-driven horror with light RPG trappings sounds appealing at all, it’s worth having in your library.
