About this game
FINAL FANTASY VII REBIRTH picks up right where the 2020 remake left off, sending Cloud Strife and his crew out of Midgar and into the wide-open world that made the original 1997 game so beloved. This is Square Enix rebuilding a classic from the ground up, not just polishing old textures, and it’s the middle chapter of a three-part retelling that gets to breathe in ways the first game couldn’t.
How it plays
You’re steering a party through a huge, open version of the FFVII world map, riding chocobos across plains, uncovering regions, and chasing story beats between Midgar and the wider planet. Combat keeps the action-RPG hybrid approach from the remake: real-time swordplay and dodging layered with an ATB gauge that fills up so you can pause the action and dish out abilities, magic, and summons. Square Enix built the PC version with high-end hardware in mind too, supporting up to 4K and 120 FPS, DLSS, variable refresh rate, and enhanced lighting and textures, plus DualSense controller support if you want that on PC. The story itself threads through some heavy material, mako energy, the planet’s lifestream, Shinra’s industrial exploitation of it, Zack Fair’s parallel journey, and Sephiroth’s fingerprints on everything, so there’s a real narrative backbone driving you between regions rather than just open-world busywork for its own sake.
Who it’s for
If you played the remake and want to see where Cloud’s story goes next, this is the obvious next stop. It’s also a good fit for RPG fans who like a mix of real-time action and tactical pausing, and for anyone who’s always wanted to actually walk around the FFVII world instead of just reading about it in a strategy guide. It’s less suited to players who bounce off long, cutscene-heavy JRPGs or who haven’t touched the first remake, since the story leans on everything that happened in Midgar. If you want something you can pick up for twenty minutes and put down, the scale here works against you.
Is it worth it?
For the kind of player who wants a substantial single-player RPG with a story they’ll actually remember, this delivers a lot of game for your time. It’s the sort of release built by a major studio with a known IP and console-level production values behind it, which is exactly the profile of game worth grabbing when it’s discounted rather than paying full freight day one. If you’re already invested in the remake trilogy or FFVII as a series, it’s a safe pickup whenever the price drops to something that feels right for you.
