It Takes Two is a co-op platformer built around a simple but ruthless idea: neither player can finish it alone. You and a partner play Cody and May, a couple on the verge of splitting up who get magically shrunk into dolls and have to work their way back to human size, and back to each other, through a house and backyard turned into a sprawling series of fantastical levels. The hook isn’t the story alone, it’s that Hazelight keeps handing you and your partner completely different tools in every new area, so the game never lets teamwork become a formality.

How it plays

You move through each chapter side by side, and the abilities you’re given almost always require the other person to pull their weight at the same time. One level might have you controlling magnetism while your partner handles momentum, another might split you into a hammer-and-nails duo, and the mechanics reset again once you reach the next area. Along the way there are set pieces and smaller challenges scattered through the environments, from squirrel skirmishes to underwear-powered flight to a full-on nightclub sequence, all of it built to keep two people leaning on each other rather than racing to the finish separately. You can play split-screen on one couch or connect online, and the game is designed so only one person needs to own it to bring a second player in for free.

Who it’s for

This is for people who have a regular co-op partner, a partner, a friend, a sibling, whoever, and want something that actually earns the word “together” instead of just letting two people exist in the same level. If you and your partner enjoy puzzle platformers, physical comedy, and games that force communication rather than just parallel play, this lands well. It’s not for solo players; there is no meaningful way to experience it by yourself, so if you don’t have someone lined up to play with regularly, it’s going to sit unplayed. It’s also worth knowing going in that it leans hard into slapstick and a fairly on-the-nose relationship metaphor, so if you want something moodier or more restrained, this isn’t that.
