About this game
Witchfire is the latest from The Astronauts, the studio built by veterans who worked on Painkiller and Bulletstorm, and you can feel that pedigree in the premise: a dark, gothic gun-and-magic hunt where you play something not quite human anymore, sent to burn a witch and her army off a stretch of coastline. It’s a single-player RPG shooter that leans into atmosphere and repeated expeditions rather than a straight linear campaign, and it’s currently in Early Access, so what you’re buying is a game still being built out in public.
How it plays
The loop centers on going out on expeditions into the witch’s territory, fighting through her forces, and deciding how greedy to get before pulling back. Survive and extract your loot safely, or push toward one of the Familiars, the tougher guardians standing between you and the good stuff, for a shot at unlocking new areas and better gear. Die out there and you get one chance to go back and recover what you lost, which adds a nice bit of tension to every run without going full permadeath. Between trips you return to the Hermitory, your home base, to rebuild your loadout from a mix of weapons, spells, and artifacts. Progress isn’t just about the equipment either. There’s a roguelite layer called Arcana that grows stronger with each encounter you finish, so even runs that don’t nail the extraction still feel like they’re building toward something. Scattered through the biomes is a slower-burn narrative thread tied to shipwrecks and a rediscovered artifact, for players who like piecing a story together rather than having it handed to them in cutscenes.
Who it’s for
This is a good fit if you like methodical, high-stakes shooters where knowing an encounter matters as much as your reflexes, and where retreating with your loot intact can feel just as satisfying as a clean kill. Fans of the extraction-run structure, or anyone who enjoyed the moment-to-moment gunplay of the developers’ earlier work, should feel right at home. It’s less suited to people who want a finished, tightly paced campaign they can play start to finish without interruption, since Early Access means systems, areas, and balance are still shifting. If you tend to wait for the 1.0 release before touching a game, this one’s worth bookmarking rather than buying today.
Is it worth it?
For the player it’s aimed at, someone who wants a moody, skill-driven shooter with roguelite bones and doesn’t mind a game that’s still evolving, there’s a real amount of substance here already, and the promise of more content as development continues. The extraction-and-rebuild loop gives it staying power beyond a single playthrough, since every trip out changes what you bring back. It’s exactly the kind of Early Access title that makes sense to grab on sale: you get to support ongoing development at a lower cost of entry while the game keeps growing, rather than paying full price for something that’s explicitly still in progress. If you’re patient and enjoy watching a game take shape, catching it on a discount is the smart way in.
