About this game
Rencounter drops you into a dungeon crawl that doesn’t care whether you’re having fun in the traditional sense. It’s the kind of roguelike that treats every hallway as a threat and every decision, right down to who eats tonight, as something that might come back to bite you. If you’ve ever wanted a turn-based RPG that plays more like a survival gauntlet than a power fantasy, this is that game.
How it plays
You’re guiding a squad through a maze of tunnels and rooms, fighting off hostile enemies in turn-based combat while picking through the wreckage for gear and supplies. The twist is that combat isn’t the only thing trying to kill you. Food and medicine are finite, and you’re the one deciding how they get split among your people. Let someone go without too long and you’ll feel it. Between fights, you’re building out your character and managing an inventory that never quite has enough room for everything you want to keep, which forces the kind of “do I really need this” decisions that good survival games thrive on. Loot pulls you deeper, but every step forward is also a step further from safety, so the loop becomes a constant negotiation between greed and caution.
Who it’s for
This is squarely for players who like their RPGs stripped down and a little punishing, the sort who enjoyed the tension of early roguelikes where a bad string of turns could unravel a whole run. If you get satisfaction out of stretching thin resources across a group of people who are all depending on you, the provisions-and-medicine system will hook you. It’s less suited to anyone looking for a story-heavy adventure or slick modern production values. The mysterious, gloomy tone is part of the appeal, not a detour from it, so go in expecting atmosphere over spectacle. If turn-based combat and inventory management sound like chores to you rather than the point, this one probably isn’t going to convert you.
Is it worth it?
For the audience that actually wants a moody, resource-tight dungeon crawler, Rencounter delivers a focused experience without a lot of filler around it. It’s not trying to be a sprawling epic, it’s trying to be a tense trip through a maze where your choices about equipment, food, and risk actually matter. That kind of scope means it won’t eat up dozens of hours the way a bigger RPG might, but it also means there’s little wasted time getting to the parts that matter. As an indie roguelike, it’s exactly the type of game that rewards patience during a sale: low commitment to try, and if the loop clicks with you, the replayability of a roguelike structure means you’ll get real mileage out of it. Grabbing it when the price drops is a low-risk way to find out if the format is for you.
