About this game
Miner’s Mettle takes the slow, deliberate math of artillery games and drops it into a strategy layer where you’re also managing an economy and a tech tree. Four factions are scrapping over a mining world rich in a substance called Pentum, and you’re not just aiming shots, you’re building the fleet that fires them. It’s a strange, appealing mashup: half the game is spreadsheet-brained resource planning, the other half is eyeballing wind and distance to land a shell on a train you can barely see.
How it plays
Your main tool is a fleet of artillery trains, and most of your time goes into figuring out how to use them well. Long-range engagements mean accounting for distance, wind speed, and trajectory rather than just pointing and clicking, so there’s real skill in landing hits on targets kilometers away. Outside of combat, you’re pulling resources to fund research, and that research unlocks new tech you can install on individual trains, letting you turn one into a spotter, another into a heavy hitter, and so on. The single-player campaign follows Roland Derecho, a retired artillery captain dragged back into a war that starts as a misunderstanding, and it runs long enough to let you take a turn with each of the four factions rather than sticking you with one playstyle for the whole story. If you’d rather skip the narrative and just fight, there’s a Horde mode for holding off waves of enemies, with options to adjust how that mode plays out to your liking.
Who it’s for
This is a game for people who like their strategy games slow and technical, the sort of player who enjoys tuning a build and calculating a shot as much as pulling the trigger. If you’ve got patience for artillery sims like Scorched Earth or Worms taken seriously, plus an appetite for base-building and tech progression layered on top, this hits a nice niche. If you want fast, reflex-driven combat or a game that holds your hand through its systems, it’s probably not for you. The scale of the battlefields and the amount of tinkering with tech and faction identity also suggests it rewards people willing to sit with one campaign for a while rather than jumping in for quick sessions.
Is it worth it?
For the strategy fan who wants something with real mechanical depth and a campaign that isn’t just a tutorial stretched thin, this is a solid pick, especially since a 22 mission campaign across four factions is a decent chunk of content to chew on. It’s a niche game from a small developer, so go in expecting a focused, somewhat rough-edged experience rather than a polished blockbuster. That said, niche strategy games like this are exactly the kind of thing worth grabbing when Steam knocks the price down, since the genre and pacing won’t click for everyone, but for the right player it’s a satisfying way to spend a lot of hours.
