About this game

Helheim Hassle is a puzzle-platformer built around a corpse that refuses to stay in one piece. You play Bjørn, a Viking who spent his whole life avoiding death because he wanted nothing to do with Valhalla, and who now finds himself dead and there anyway. When a strange figure named Pesto offers him a way out, a shot at getting his old, ordinary life back, Bjørn takes it, which means dragging his own detachable limbs through Norse mythology to fetch a magical item Pesto wants. It’s a weird premise played completely straight-faced, and that tension between grim setup and goofy execution is basically the whole appeal.

How it plays

The trick is that Bjørn’s body comes apart on command. Arms, legs, whatever else, can be pulled off and reattached or thrown to solve environmental puzzles and get through each level’s obstacles. That mechanic threads through 14 levels and more than 90 puzzles, so the game keeps finding new ways to make “throw your own arm at something” feel fresh rather than gimmicky. It’s not just physical puzzle-solving either. The world is dense with people to talk to, over 80 interactable characters, and the story is fully voiced across thousands of lines of dialogue performed by a large cast of actors. So you’re bouncing between platforming sections where you’re rearranging your own limbs and narrative stretches where the writing and voice work are doing the heavy lifting. Coming from the same team and universe as Manual Samuel, it leans on that same mix of dark comedy and mechanical weirdness.

Who it’s for

This is for people who like narrative adventure games with an actual mechanical hook, not just point-and-click logic. If you enjoyed the oddball physical-comedy angle of Manual Samuel, or you just like games that commit fully to a strange idea (dismemberment as a traversal tool, played for laughs), this hits that spot. Puzzle-platformer fans who want something more story-driven than reflex-driven will also get along with it well, since the challenge here is about experimentation and figuring out limb combinations rather than twitch timing. It’s less suited to players who want a straight platformer with tight controls, or anyone allergic to a game leaning hard into its own dark, silly sense of humor. If you need your Norse mythology played reverently, this one’s going to grate.

Is it worth it?

For the audience it’s built for, this is a satisfying, complete package: a real number of distinct levels and puzzles, a fully voiced cast, and a mechanic that actually gets explored rather than shown once and forgotten. It’s not an enormous game, but it’s not padded either, and the puzzle-and-story rhythm holds up because both halves were clearly given real attention. Games like this, narrative-heavy, mechanically distinct, finite in length, tend to be exactly the kind you want sitting in a wishlist for when it dips in price, since you get a full, self-contained experience without needing dozens of hours to feel like it paid off. If the premise appeals to you at all, it’s a safe one to grab whenever it’s discounted.
