About this game

How it plays

You wake up soaking wet, having ducked into the nearest house to escape a storm, and that’s where The Guest starts and basically stays. There’s no sprawling map to clear or inventory of gadgets to manage. You walk through rooms, look at things, and try to figure out what’s safe to touch and what isn’t, all while something in the house is very aware you’re there. The game leans on slow-burn dread rather than jump-scare spam, at least based on how it’s built: you’re meant to explore, piece together what happened in this place, and stay alert because turning your back on an empty hallway doesn’t mean it stays empty. It’s a first-person psychological horror game in the strictest sense, meaning the scares are about tension and uncertainty, not combat or puzzles with obvious mechanical rules.

Who it’s for

If you’re the type who plays horror games with the lights off and headphones on, specifically because you want to feel unsettled, this is squarely aimed at you. People who like Visage, Layers of Fear, or other first-person “wrong house” style horror will recognize the shape of it immediately. It’s also a good fit if you want a horror game you can finish in a sitting or two rather than a long campaign. It’s probably not for you if you want action, weapons, or a way to fight back against what’s stalking you, or if jump-scare heavy slow-burn horror just isn’t your genre. The developer’s own warning is worth repeating here: if you’ve got heart problems, don’t love being alone in the dark, or know you spook easily, go in with that in mind.

Is it worth it?

This reads as a small, focused indie horror experience rather than a sprawling AAA production, and that’s fine as long as you set your expectations accordingly. You’re paying for atmosphere and a tense couple of hours, not dozens of hours of content. For horror fans who collect these kinds of experiences the way others collect roguelikes, it’s an easy one to pick up when it’s discounted, since the genre tends to reward trying a lot of different haunted houses rather than waiting for one perfect pick. If you’re newer to psychological horror and unsure it’s your thing, grabbing it on sale is the lower-risk way to find out.
