About this game
How it plays
Mordheim: City of the Damned takes the old Games Workshop tabletop skirmish game and turns it into a turn-based tactical RPG, and the translation keeps the stuff that made the source material tense. You’re not commanding an army, you’re running a small warband of maybe a dozen fighters through the ruins of a city that got wrecked by a falling comet and is now crawling with chaos cultists, mutants, and rival gangs all fighting over Wyrdstone fragments. Missions play out on ruined streets and crumbling buildings where height, cover, and ambush angles actually matter, and every fight carries real weight because losses aren’t temporary. Wounded fighters can come away maimed, and the dead stay dead. That permadeath thread runs through everything: you loot gear off fallen enemies, spend Wyrdstone to recruit and re-equip, and watch your survivors level up into genuinely scary veterans, but only if you keep them alive long enough to get there. There’s a solo campaign for working through the story missions, plus multiplayer for players who want to test their warband against real opponents instead of the AI.
Who it’s for
This one’s built for people who like their tactics games slow, mean, and a little punishing. If you’ve got fond memories of the tabletop original, or you just like squad-based tactics where every decision has consequences that stick, this scratches that itch in a way a lot of glossier strategy games don’t bother with anymore. Warhammer fans will obviously feel at home picking between factions like the Sisters of Sigmar, the Skaven, or Empire mercenaries. On the other hand, if you want something breezy or forgiving, or you get frustrated losing a leveled-up unit to one bad roll, this is going to wear on you fast. It’s not a game that holds your hand, and it’s not trying to be.
Is it worth it?
For the right player, this is the kind of game that rewards patience with a lot of mileage. Building a warband from scratch, watching it survive a few brutal skirmishes, and then losing a favorite fighter to a dumb mistake is the whole appeal, and that loop holds up because the tactical fundamentals (positioning, cover, risk management) are solid. It’s a niche pick rather than a must-own for everyone, so if you’re on the fence, it’s exactly the sort of title worth grabbing when it’s discounted rather than paying full price to find out if the permadeath tension clicks for you. Warhammer fans and tactics grinders will get plenty out of it either way.
