About this game
Zanzarah: The Hidden Portal is a 2002 cult classic that finally made its way to digital storefronts through Fanatical, and it’s a strange, charming mix of things you don’t usually see combined: an action-adventure exploration game wrapped around a full creature-collecting battle system. You play as Amy, a girl who stumbles into Zanzarah, a fairy-tale realm that’s coming apart at the seams, and you’re the one who has to hold it together by bonding fairies and demons to your cause. If you grew up chasing that Pokemon-meets-real-3D-world itch and never quite found another game that scratched it, this is probably the one people have been telling you about.
How it plays
The world itself is built for wandering: you explore a fully realized 3D fantasy setting, talking to characters, picking up items, and slowly uncovering how Zanzarah’s fate connects to the real world Amy came from. Scattered through that world are 77 fairies and demons split across 12 elements, and catching and training them is the game’s real backbone. Once you’ve built up a team, you throw them into action-based duels rather than turn-based menus, so positioning and timing carry more weight than just picking the strongest move off a list. Between exploring, recruiting, training, and fighting, the loop keeps looping back on itself: better creatures let you push into new areas, and new areas hand you fresh creatures to go find.
Who it’s for
This one’s for players who like their RPGs a little weird and a little slow-burn, the kind of person who’s fine spending an evening just poking around a map to see what’s in the corners. If you have a soft spot for early-2000s PC games and don’t mind some dated presentation in exchange for a genuinely inventive creature system, you’ll probably fall for it fast. It’s less suited to players who want tight, modern combat or a game that respects their time with fast pacing; Zanzarah asks for patience and rewards curiosity more than reflexes. Go in expecting a relic with real heart, not a polished current-gen RPG.
Is it worth it?
For the kind of player described above, this is exactly the sort of game worth having in your library even if you don’t touch it the day you buy it. It’s a piece of PC gaming history that vanished from shelves for years, and getting to own a legitimate digital copy has value on its own before you even factor in how much game is packed into that 77-creature roster. It’s not the kind of title you need to play immediately, but it’s absolutely the kind of title worth snapping up when it’s discounted, since the appeal here is nostalgia and niche genre-blending rather than cutting-edge production values. Treat it as a low-risk pickup for a rainy weekend rather than a must-play-now purchase.
