About this game

Eldest Souls strips the souls-like formula down to its purest form: no sprawling map to memorize, no filler enemies to grind through, just you, a greatsword made of obsydian, and a gauntlet of furious old gods that want you dead. Fallen Flag Studio built the whole game around boss fights, and that focus is the hook. If you’ve ever wished a Souls game would cut the travel time and get straight to the part where you’re dodging a screen-filling monster, this is that wish granted in pixel form.

How it plays

The setup is simple and a little grim: humanity chained up the Old Gods centuries ago, and now those gods have broken loose and are unmaking the world in revenge. You’re the one warrior left to march into the Citadel and put them down one by one. Each Old God is its own puzzle. You’ll spend your first few attempts just learning the rhythm of a fight, its tells, its openings, the moment you can actually get a hit in, before you start closing the gap between “getting destroyed” and “winning clean.” Beat a god and you inherit a sliver of its power, which feeds into a talent and ability system that lets you shape your own fighting style rather than following one prescribed build. Between fights, the Citadel itself gives you room to breathe: NPCs, side questlines, and scraps of lore about why the gods were locked away in the first place, all wrapped in a detailed 16-bit art style that makes the crumbling architecture feel genuinely ancient.

Who it’s for

This one’s for players who treat boss fights as the whole point of a game rather than a hurdle between exploration segments. If you like the process of getting wrecked by something huge, studying it, and slowly turning the fight into a dance you control, Eldest Souls is built exactly for that itch. Fans of 2D action-RPGs and pixel art will also find a lot to like in how the Citadel is drawn. On the flip side, if you need a big open world to poke around in, a deep inventory to manage, or a story told through cutscenes rather than implication, you’ll likely find this too narrow. It’s a game about repetition and mastery, and if that loop doesn’t appeal to you, nothing else here is going to compensate.

Is it worth it?

For the audience that wants exactly what it offers, a lean, boss-focused action-RPG with real teeth, Eldest Souls earns its keep. It’s not trying to be a hundred-hour epic, and it doesn’t pad itself out to look bigger than it is, which honestly makes it a comfortable pickup when it’s discounted. You’re paying for a concentrated dose of tense, high-stakes combat rather than breadth, and that’s a fair trade if boss rushes are your thing. It’s the kind of smaller indie title that’s easy to recommend snagging when you spot it in a sale, especially since a discount removes the only real risk, which is finding out the format isn’t for you.
