About this game

Before Dead Island got a definitive edition, it was already a bit of a phenomenon, mostly thanks to a trailer that promised something far more emotional than the game actually delivered. What’s here instead is a blunt, satisfying survival game about beating zombies to death with whatever’s lying around on a tropical island that’s gone very wrong. This remaster cleans up the visuals and folds in the game’s DLC, but the bones are the same open-world melee brawler that made Techland’s name years before Dying Light took the formula further.

How it plays

You’re on the island of Banoi when the outbreak hits, and from there it’s an open-world grind of scavenging, crafting, and caving in skulls with makeshift weapons, machetes, pipes, whatever you can find or mod together. The melee combat is the whole pitch: it’s heavier and more physical than most zombie games, with weapons that degrade and demand upkeep. The story pushes you across distinct environments, from resort beaches to a wrecked city and up into the highlands, and it’s built around four-player co-op, so you can tackle the campaign solo or bring friends along for the same narrative thread. This edition adds sharper textures, better lighting, and higher-resolution models on top of that original structure, plus all the previously released DLC bundled in.

Who it’s for

If you like open-world loot-and-craft games with a strong physical combat hook, this still scratches that itch, especially if you’ve got friends to split the co-op with. It also appeals to anyone curious about where Techland’s later, more polished work came from. It’s a rougher, older design than modern open-world games, though, with jankier pacing and mission structure than you’d get today.
