About this game
How it plays
OOZEBORNE hands you a blob-like character and drops you into fifty levels spread across five worlds, each one built around obstacle courses that demand tight timing and quick reflexes. The trick that separates it from a standard 3D platformer is color-switching: certain surfaces or paths only open up when you’re the right color, so on top of jumping and dodging you’re constantly reading the level for which shade you need to be next. Falling off, getting splattered, or otherwise wiping out is baked into the rhythm of play rather than something to dread, which fits the tone of a game that wants you laughing through your failures instead of raging at them. An original score plays under all of this chaos, and as you clear levels you pick up coins that feed into an in-game shop. That shop isn’t just cosmetic filler either: you can spend coins on practical upgrades like extra jump height or faster movement to push through a level that’s been giving you trouble, and there’s also a companion you can unlock if you’d rather not gooze your way through the worlds solo.
Who it’s for
This one’s aimed squarely at players who get a kick out of precision platforming and don’t mind repeating a section a dozen times to nail it. If you liked the trial-and-error loop of games like Getting Over It or the color-based puzzle-platforming of something like Splasher, the pitch here will click immediately. The shop-based upgrade system also makes it more approachable than most punishing platformers, since you’re never just stuck if a level clicks worse for you than for someone else. On the flip side, if you find slippery, physics-driven movement frustrating rather than fun, or you want a platformer with a story and stakes attached to it, this isn’t going to convert you. It reads as a game built for score-chasers and completionists who like the shape of a level more than the shape of a plot.
Is it worth it?
Fifty handcrafted levels across five distinct worlds is a reasonable amount of content for a genre where the whole point is repetition and mastery rather than length. Games like this tend to earn their keep less through runtime and more through how well the core mechanic holds up level after level, and a color-switching platforming hook with a built-in upgrade shop suggests a developer who thought about pacing and player frustration rather than just stacking obstacles. It’s the kind of title that’s easy to recommend picking up when it’s discounted, since precision platformers are best sampled in short bursts rather than binged, and a sale price takes the pressure off if the difficulty curve ends up being steeper than you expected.
