About this game
ARKADIANAX is the kind of game that almost didn’t happen. One developer, Ale Navarro, built it in his off hours between 2011 and 2013, running it on an aging engine and clearly channeling a lifelong love of Atari-era arcade shooters. It sat in limbo for years, first on the now-defunct Desura, before finally landing on Steam. That backstory matters here because it explains exactly what you’re getting: a scrappy, sincere shoot ’em up made by someone who grew up on this stuff and wanted to build his own tribute to it.
How it plays
You pilot the ARKADIANAX ship through eight levels of enemy ships, tanks, minefields, laser beams, and oversized bosses, all wrapped in a loose story about multidimensional chaos and glitching software bugs made physical. The twist that gives it some personality is the mix of 2D and 3D enemies sharing the same screen, so the visual style keeps shifting even as the core loop stays familiar: dodge, shoot, upgrade your ship, power up your cannons, repeat. There’s a password system that hands you small combat boosts at the start of levels, a nice nod to how old arcade and console games used to handle progression before save files were standard. It also supports local co-op if you’ve got two controllers plugged in, and co-op ramps up the enemy count for extra chaos. Full controller support is here throughout, and the intro and outro run in both English and Spanish.
Who it’s for
If you grew up on 1980s arcade shooters, or you just have a soft spot for shmups that wear their influences on their sleeve, this is squarely built for you. It rewards quick reflexes and pattern recognition over anything resembling modern hand-holding. Bring a friend with a second controller and you’ve got a solid couch co-op session too. On the other hand, if you’re expecting slick modern production values, a lengthy campaign, or a story-driven experience, look elsewhere. This is a small, focused, one-person passion project, and it plays like one, in both the charming and the rough-edged sense of that phrase.
Is it worth it?
For genre fans, this is the kind of game that’s easy to justify picking up when it’s discounted. It’s not pretending to be a ten-hour epic. It’s a tight arcade shooter with a handful of levels, a co-op mode, and a soundtrack built to match the aesthetic, and it delivers exactly that without padding. If you already know you like shmups from this era, it’s a low-risk way to spend an evening or two, especially with a second player. If you’re on the fence about the genre entirely, it’s a much easier sell once the price comes down.
